What can forest managers learn from experiencing two certification systems firsthand? This report compares FSC and SFI assessments conducted on approximately 700,000 acres of public and university forests. Participating managers evaluated each program’s standards, assessment process, and usefulness in improving forest stewardship. Their responses identify shared strengths and differences in ecological and social coverage, clarity, auditing, and continuous improvement. Reflecting the programs as they operated during the study, this early field-based comparison offers a historical perspective on certification’s role in strengthening forest management and public accountability.
