Industrial Timberland Divestitures and Investments

Nadine E. Block and V. Alaric Sample (2001)

What happens to forest conservation when timber companies sell their land? Drawing on a Pinchot Institute symposium, this report examines the forces driving industrial timberland sales and the growing role of institutional investors and timberland investment management organizations. It explores how changing ownership can affect forest stewardship, fragmentation, and development, alongside opportunities for conservation partnerships. Case studies and recommendations address conservation easements, funding, and acquisition priorities, offering a historical perspective on protecting the public benefits of privately owned forests during a period of significant ownership change.
