Sustainability in US Forest Policy

V. Alaric Sample (2004)

How did sustainable forestry evolve from maintaining timber supplies to sustaining a broader range of ecological, economic, and social values? This discussion paper traces that evolution and examines how U.S. forest policy has supported—and sometimes complicated—its implementation. Topics include biodiversity conservation, international sustainability criteria, forest certification, and the complementary roles of protected and managed forests. Published in 2004, the paper explores how policy and cooperation among conservation interests, communities, and businesses can help reconcile immediate needs with the long-term health and productivity of forests.
